Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says that scammers are at work in Chattooga County and wants to warn area residents not to fall for the scam.

The Sheriff said that his office has received several calls about an IRS scam.  The sheriff says that if you receive a call saying that your social security number has been “hacked” or compromised, it is a scam.

Sheriff Schrader told WZQZ News that the callers are attempting to extort social security numbers from potential victims.  The sheriff says to never give out your social security number, or any other personal details to these callers.  According to the sheriff, one of the telephone numbers being used by the scammers is a Pennsylvania number, 717-387-7586.

Should you receive a call that you suspect to be a scam, you should report it to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department.
