The Summerville City Council voted this week to fund cancer policies for the city’s firefighters.
Summerville City Attorney Albert Palmour and Mayor Harry Harvey explained to the council that the policies were necessary due to a new state law that went into effect on January 1st. The law requires all fire department across the state to fund the policies for active firefighters. The measure was adopted on a motion by Councilman David Ford with a second from Councilman Zach Martin.
At Monday’s meeting, Summerville Fire Chief Robbie Latham said that the city’s fire department had responded to seven structure fires, three cooking fires and one rubbish fire in December. The fire department responded to a total of sixty-three calls for the month.
