The City of Summerville has set the date for the “Celebrate Independence” event for 2017.

The date will be Saturday, July 1st. This will mark the tenth year the event has been held near the Fourth of July holiday.  Summerville City Manager Tony Carroll says that there will be sack races, corn hole tournaments and a greasy pole contest, as there was last year.

Summerville Main Street Director Susan Locklear told AM 1180 this week that the city is planning additional events for this year’s celebration.  She said that the city has booked the Atlanta Production Band to headline the event and that the city will also be hiring an opening band for the event.

The event is expected to cost over $18,000.  $5,000 of that will come from a grant from the Tillotson-Menlo Foundation and the city expects to raise $10,000 by selling advertising.  $3,500 will come out of the city’s general fund.
