Rev. Jimmy Bailey, a native of Trion, Georgia is celebrating a milestone today at the church he pastors in Northeast Alabama.

Rev. Bailey has been the pastor at Reed Memorial Baptist Church in Attalla for fifty years today.  According to the Gadsden Times, that is a record for a pastor in Alabama.  The paper reported this past week that according to the Southern Baptist Convention, the average tenure for a Baptist pastor is three years.

After graduating from Trion High School, Bailey worked a variety of jobs, including a stint at Riegel Textile before joining the Navy.

Bailey told the Gadsden Times that he has preached revivals all over the country, but has returned every Sunday for the past fifty years to preach at Reed Memorial.

Bailey has a radio program on a local station in Attalla that was started just a few years after he became pastor at Reed Memorial.  That radio program is the longest running radio program in Alabama history.

Today Rev. Bailey’s church will honor him and his wife, Joyce, with a special service and in true Baptist fashion – a covered dish dinner.
