Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader tells AM 1180 that a law enforcement agent fired shots at a wanted fugitive around 3:30 on Monday afternoon.
According to the sheriff, the officer was assisting in an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Marshall's Service that also involved other state and local law enforcement agencies.
The incident took place on Halls Valley Road near the Walker County Line. The law enforcement agent approached the residence where the fugitive was believed to be. The fugitive made himself known and had a weapon.
The officer fired his weapon and struck the fugitive.
The fugitive has not been named yet by law enforcement.
Sheriff Schrader says that the GBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure in these cases.
We will have more information as it is released from the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department.
An earlier version of this story said that a Chattooga County Deputy Fired the shots. Sheriff Schrader tells AM 1180 that it was not a Chattooga County Deputy that fired the shots, but deputies were assisting in the investigation, in which a warrant was being served. Sheriff Schrader said that the identity of the law enforcement agent that fired the shots is not being released at this time.
