Eight men have been charged with defrauding Temple-Inland Timber company in Floyd County.  According to court records from U.S. District Court in Rome, the men conspired to defraud the company by submitting false timber loads and accepting payments for those loads.

The alleged fraud operation worked this way:  the person working the scales at Temple-Inland would submitt two reports for a single tractor-trailer load of logs which would then result in a bogus check being issued for logs that were never cut and hauled.

The "scaler" along with 7 timber cutters all plead "not guilty" in U.S. District Court yesterday.  In all it is aleged the men accepted around $4.8 million for phony loads of logs that were never delivered.
