DeKalb County Alabama deputies broke up an apparent cock fighting ring Saturday after several tips from community members led them to the location.

Investigators discovered the spot at about 9:30 a.m. in a secluded location off of County Road 386 in the Aroney community.

DeKalb County Chief Deputy Michael Edmondson said at least two people fled into the woods when deputies arrived. He said they found a pit with benches around and several people present.

“Since we didn’t witness anyone fighting the animals or gambling, no arrests were made,” Edmondson said.

He said animal control officers took about 12 roosters to the DeKalb Animal Adoption Center. It’s not known what will happen to the roosters. Deputies also confiscated about $1,000 in cash.

Edmondson said arrests are possible after deputies determine who owns the property at the DeKalb probate judge’s office on Monday. Cock fighting is a misdemeanor in Alabama that carries with it a $50 fine.
