DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said the drowning death of a toddler in the Aroney community Monday is believed to be accidental.
Harris said the matter remains under investigation. Names of those involved were withheld Monday, pending notification of family members.
Harris said it appears the toddler, an 18-month-old boy, drown after wandering outside and falling into a child’s inflatable swimming pool. He said the toddler’s father was at the home on DeKalb County Road 1927, along with a 3-year-old and 5-year-old.
Harris said the father apparently believed the children to be in an adjacent room, watching cartoons, and when he went to check on them, discovered the 3-year-old and the toddler had somehow wandered outside, and the toddler had fallen into the pool.
Harris said the father called 911 and attempted CPR.
DeKalb Ambulance Service Director Mark Ford said an ambulance was called to the house shortly after 11 a.m. Monday. The toddler was taken to Marshall Medical Center South and pronounced dead on arrival.
Harris said the child’s body would be sent to the forensic science lab in Huntsville for an autopsy.
