DeKalb County authorities charged an Ider woman Friday with capital murder after a two-year investigation into the death of her stepfather.
Karrie Denise Willoughby age 32 turned herself in at the DeKalb County Jail. If convicted, she could face the death penalty. Willoughby is charged with killing her stepfather, Billie Junior Shaw, 65. The alleged crime happened on April 22, 2008.
Sheriff Jimmy Harris said Willoughby told police she found her stepfather dead in his home.
Initial reports suggested Shaw died of a heart attack. An autopsy was performed after an exhumation , the first in more than four decades in DeKalb County , of his body in May 2009.
Authorities say the autopsy revealed Shaw died from a lethal injection of Propofol, the same drug that allegedly killed pop singer Michael Jackson. Propofol is an anesthetic typically used during surgery.
Willoughby’s attorney, Bruce Gardner, said she had worked as a nurse in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Willoughby appeared before Circuit Judge David Rains on Friday afternoon for an initial hearing. A bond hearing has not been set, and Willoughby is in DeKalb County Jail without bond.
