Last week Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters announced that the burn ban was postponed in Chattooga County until May 16th. The Commissioner was able to convince the Georgia EPD to put off the burn ban for the county which normally would be the first day of May.
Residents who have attempted to get a burn ban by using the online permit system have not been able to get a permit. The online system states that no permits will be issued until October 1st. However, Commissioner Winters told AM 1180 on Tuesday that residents who have had storm damage and want to burn vegitation should call the Georgia Forestry Service in Summerville to get a permit. The number is 706-857-0800.
Officials with the Georgia Forestry Service stated that only people burning vegitation from storm damage will be issued a permit – no lumber or household debris may be burned.
