The former co-owner of both of Rome’s Arby’s restaurants along with another in Rockmart said the businesses were taken over by a third party which effectively forced him to shut the doors.

Jonathan Parnell of Alabama the co-owner of PRP Inc. the parent company of 25 stores in the Gulf Coast region, including the three local Arby’s, said he filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January. Both Parnell and the other co-owner Jeff Calhoun appeared in court Wednesday to submit a plan to come out of bankruptcy.

However, he said, at that time he found out the business had been taken over by another company.

Parnell said the new owner wanted the 22 stores not in this region.

"You can guess which ones he didn’t want," Parnell said.

Parnell then spoke with Arby’s corporate and ordered employees to lock up the businesses, and there was no plan to issue any more paychecks.

"There was nothing I could do about it," Parnell said. "I am very very sorry this happened to all our employees."

He estimated the three locations employed 40 to 55 people.
