With temperatures in the 90`s and the heat index breaking the 100 mark, taking time to think about ways to protect yourself from the extreme heat is time well spent. People should be aware of the early warning signs of both Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke. Some of those indicators for Heat Exhaustion include: Cool, moist or flushed skin; heavy sweating; headache; nausea or vomiting; and/or dizziness. Body temperatures will however, remain close to normal. Indicators for Heat Stroke include: Hot, red skin; changes in consciousness; rapid, weak pulse and rapid shallow breathing, with a dramatic increase in body temperature – sometimes as high as 105 F. Above all, people should try to slow down and avoid strenous activity.
Stay indoors as much as possible. Other factors that will help you keep cool, include wearing light colored clothing & drinking plenty of water, even if you`re not thirsty. Be sure to keep a check on elderly neighbors or family members – as they – along with young children are the most susceptible to extreme heat conditions. Also make sure your pets have plenty of fresh water to drink to help them stay hydrated.
