A decomposing body found on the Chattooga River about 7:45 p.m. today has given sheriff investigators a twist in their case.

Once sheriff officials recieved word that a body was discovered in the river, they thought it might be a local woman who went missing in Summerville on Feb. 17, 2010. But it wasn’t, according to Chattooga County Sheriff John Everett.

"The body was decomposed pretty bad," Sheriff Everett said.

After getting a boat into the water, rescue workers were able to retrieve the body around 9:15 p.m., according to Sheriff Everett.

Originally investigators could not see the body clearly from their vantage point and could not identify the sex or gender until rescue workers reached the body.

The body appears to be a black male of unknown age, height, etc."We are sending the body to the GBI Crime lab," Sheriff Everett said.  Neither the sheriff nor investigators could tell if foul play was involved.
