Last week, the Centre, Alabama Fire Department received a $79,650 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers said that the funding will help the department purchase new firefighitng operations and safety equipment.

Rogers said the grant would be awarded under the 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, a Federal Program which supports first responders across Alabama and the nation.

The purpose of the program is to award funding directly to fire departments and also to non-affiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations with the aim of enhancing first responders ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel, with respect to fire-related hazards. Rogers is Ranking Member of the Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response, on the Committee on Homeland Security in Congress.
