Tommy Hawkins, Chief Ranger for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources told AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio on Thursday that residents can apply for burn permits, however there are certain requirements that county land owners should be aware of.

Permits will be issued on a day by day basis.  Weather permitting, permits will be issued between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, 7 Days per week.  Only natural vegetation is allowed to be burnt, such as leaves, limbs and grass.  No lumber is supposed to be burned.  If logs are cut into lumber or slabs it is not allowed by the E.P.D.  Also no tires or roofing is allowed to be burned.

To obtain a permit for a small pile six foot by six foot or smaller you may call the automated permit system phone number at 1-877-OK2-BURN (652-2876).  You may obtain a permit online by going to: www.gfc.state.ga.us  and following the links to burning permits.

If you have large piles or acreage or for agricultural burns you should call the Chattooga County Office at 706-857-0800.
