Chattooga County was the only county in our area spared from last week’s deadly tornadoes that ripped through much of the South. The relief effort in Chattooga County began almost immediately on Thursday of last week as Chattooga Family Connection organized to begin sending supplies to the storm ravaged areas of DeKalb County, Alabama and Dade and Walker Counties in Georgia.
Since last week the good people of Chattooga County have brought many supplies to drop-off locations. On Monday a plea for more workers went out at the Chattooga County Library to help sort through the donations and prepare them for shipment. Over 30 volunteers showed up on Monday and today there is still a need for volunteers. If you would like to help just show up at the Summerville branch of the Chattooga County Library any time after 10:30 AM.
Vicky VanPelt with Chattooga Family Connection told AM 1180 that supplies were sent on Monday to Dade County twice; Rainsville, Alabama and Henager, Alabama along with Flinstone, Georgia and Catoosa County, Georgia. Another load is ready to go to Catoosa County today.
VanPelt said that there has been a true community effort with churches and organizations coming together in a unified effort to relieve the suffering of the storm victims. The need for supplies is still great. Here is a list of the things most needed at this time:
underwear – male and female
tarps and rain ponchos
industrial type garbage bags
canned goods – prefer "pop tops"
flashlights and batteries
charcoal – lighter fluid
diapers
