The number of people affected by the banking scam that has hit Northwest Georgia has grown to over 500 residents – mostly in Walker and Chattooga Counties.

The FBI is saying that the illegal transactions that stole money from local accounts  occured in far-away places like Mexico and Egypt.  Investigators say that it could take a long time to track down the criminals that are responsible.  It is possible that the information taken from the stolen credit and debit cards my be sold on the internet.

While most of the reported cases have been in Walker County, Chattooga County residents are also reporting the theft of their credit and debit card information in relation to this banking scam. The FBI is saying that residents may want to suspend use of debit cards until more informaiton is known about the scam.  Experts say that you have a little more security with credit cards.
