Berry College welcomed a total of 13 teams for its spring 2010 sixth-grade math competition, including two from Chattooga County. Top finishers, in order, were Jasper Middle School, Heritage Middle School of Ringgold and St. Mary’s School of Rome. Top individuals were Logan Fountain of Jasper Middle School, Adam Morzinski of Heritage and Val Browning of Coosa Middle School.
Participating schools included Clear Creek Middle School in Ellijay, Coosa Middle School, Dade Middle School in Trenton, Gilmer Middle School in Ellijay, Heritage Middle School, Jasper Middle School, LaFayette Middle School, Menlo Elementary School, Pickens County Middle School in Jasper, Ringgold Middle School, St. Mary’s School, Sonoraville Middle School in Calhoun and Summerville Middle School.
Berry College hosts these seasonal competitions as a way of promoting and encouraging mathematical excellence among area students. Several Berry College students and mathematics faculty assisted with the event.
Katy Borek, a junior mathematics major and the daughter of Stanley and Michele Borek of Warner Robins, Ga., served as student coordinator. Dr. Martha Tapia, associate professor of mathematics education, was the faculty supervisor.
