The Georgia Department of Labor has released preliminary unemployment numbers that show Chattooga County’s unemployment rate at 14.3%. According to the statistics, Chattooga County has a workforce of 10,740 people and of those workers 1,539 are unemployed. The rate is up from 12% one year ago. After several months of unemployment rates remaining basically unchanged, the spike has put Chattooga County near the top in unemployment claims in the state. In the spring of 2008 Chattooga County posted a record-high unemployment rate of 14.8%.
