The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced the awarding of a $1.1 million contract to replace the bridge over Chelsea Creek, located 3.2 miles north of Menlo on Old State Route 337.  The bid was awarded to Talley Construction from Rossville, Georgia.

Last year, the Georgia DOT held public meetings about the proposed bridge replacement and put forth a plan for a detour around the bridge during construction.  The bridge is to be completed by the end of October 2020.

Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters says that the bridge replacement will be mostly funded with money from the Georgia Department of Transportation; however, the county will have to foot between $30,000 – $40,000 of the project.   That money is half of what it will cost to move an existing county-owned waterline near the bridge. The Georgia DOT is picking up the rest of the cost to relocate that water line.

The Georgia DOT says that the bridge replacement is part of their commitment to keeping bridges and roadways safe for motorists.
