A cock fighting ring that was busted in DeKalb County, Alabama over the weekend may result in illegal immigrants being deported according to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris.

Harris said the matter remains under investigation and arrests are possible after deputies determine who owns the property. That determination had not yet been made on Monday. Cock fighting is a misdemeanor in Alabama that carries with it a $50 fine.

Harris said his department is working with federal Immigration and Customs officials and the DeKalb County district attorney’s office to determine whether any of the spectators at the fight were illegal immigrants. He said any determined to be in the U.S. illegally could face deportation.

Harris said the live roosters were turned over to the DeKalb County Animal Adoption Center. Leslie Johnson, director of the center, said an attempt would be made to find homes for the birds once the investigation has been closed.
