DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris reports an investigation into the death of a South DeKalb County man.

The victim, tentatively identified as Jerry Neal Burt, age 63, was discovered by a friend on Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m. while he was on a routine visit to the victim’s home on County Road 58.

There was evidence of a fire in the residence as the friend opened the door to check on the victim.

After a short search, the victim was discovered and authorities were contacted. Geraldine Fire Department responded, checked the house for fire and cleared the smoke. Medical personnel and Coroner Tom Wilson pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

DeKalb County Investigators and Deputy State Fire Marshals processed the scene. The body was removed and sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy to determine the cause of death and to make positive identifications.

The case is being pursued as a homicide at this time, and further information will be released at the proper time
