Assistant Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Corrections Brian Owens, told AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio this afternoon that there is an ongoing investigation into the internal workings of the prison in Pennville. This was in response to a question about the possibility that the two prisoners that escaped had any inside assistance in getting out of Hays Prison. Owens would not confirm that the two inmates have a cell phone in their possession, however he said that "we can assume they have a communication device."
Owens also stated that two Hays Prison employees have been put on suspension as a result of the investigation. Owens stated that extra steps are being taken at Hays Prison to insure the security of the community. Today workers installed another layer of razor wire to the perimeter fence at the prison.
Listen for the complete interview with Commissioner Owens coming up today at 3 PM, 4 PM, and 5:45 PM and then Saturday at 8:30 AM.
