A fatal accident on Highway 48 Friday afternoon shortly after 5 PM took the life of one woman and sent another to Erlanger Medical Center with extensive injuries.  The accident occurred on Marks Hill just west of Summerville. 

 

Both women were driving Sports Utility Vehicles.  Sue Ellenburg Hight of Rome was travelling East Bound on Highway 48 in a 1999 Chevy Tahoe  when she topped the hill a 2000 Chevy Blazer driven by Penny Latrice Ammons of Summerville veered into the path of Hight’s vehicle.  Ammons was travelling West Bound and went into the East Bound Lane.

Hight was pronounced dead by Chattooga County Coroner Earl Rainwater at the scene.  Ammons was transported to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga by Lifeforce Helicopter and is serious condition.  Charges are pending against Ammons in the incident.  The wreck is under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol’s Special Reconstruction Team.

Traffic on Highway 48 was being routed around Back Berryton Road for around 2 hours as emergency workers cleaned up the crash sight.   

Troopers from the Rome Post of the Georgia State Patrol, along with Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies, Chattooga County EMS and Summerville and Menlo Fire Departments along with Rescue Workers were all on the scene.
