One man was injured and another was left missing and later found dead after an Easter fishing trip went wrong Sunday Morning.
The men, a step father and step son, had put their boat into the Etowah River early Sunday Morning at the Grizzard Park Boatramp just off of GA Loop 1. The men floated about a half of mile down river and according to Rome Fire Battalion Chief Troy Brock, anchored in the middle of the river, a very dangerous act. Sometime around 9:00 AM, the boat capsized, dumping them into the strong currents.
According to witnesses, the step son held onto his dad, but lost grip on his shirt before making it to the riverbank. The son then held onto a tree and began calling for help, a call which was heard by the resident at 35 Bridgeview Dr. in the Etowah Subdivision off of Turners Chapel Rd. The resident was able to pull the man onto dry ground and call for 911.
Rome Fire Engine 4, Rescue 1, Car 25, and the Rescue 51 Boat responded along with County and City Police and Floyd EMS. Later, EMA responded units including a boat to the scene and state DNR Rangers responded with two additional boats to investigate the accident.
The second man was found dead near the riverbank around 7:00 PM Sunday Night by EMA and DNR Units.
DNR Rangers were in charge and investigating the accident along with the Floyd Co. Police.
