Deputy Sheriff Mike Mitchell was terminated today from his employment with The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Mitchell was found to have been participating in illicit conversation via internet and transmitting pornographic photographs of himself and others using sheriff’s office computers while assigned to a tower within the jail.

The sheriff’s office had received a tip about Deputy Mitchell from one of the persons he was having conversations with, according to information received from the week long inquiry, in which the sheriff’s office was assisted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations.

Deputy Mitchell’s employment was terminated this morning by Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell as soon as he was able to meet with Mitchell. Any information recovered will be made available to Floyd County District Attorney Leigh Patterson for review. The sheriff’s office does not expect to file any charges as of this date in the matter.

According to Chief Deputy Caldwell, “Anytime we have employees who don’t meet the standards we set for ourselves or that the public has of us, then we will take action every time.” Mitchell was a 15-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and had once held the rank of Corporal. Mitchell has 10 days to file an appeal of his firing to the Floyd County Civil Service Board.

Any questions can be referred to Chief Caldwell at 706-252-4698
