Friday and Saturday residents of Chattooga County brought about 150 tons of garbage to the county for disposal. The first Free Garbage day of 2010 came with absolutely beautiful weather on Saturday. Commissioner Jason Winters told AM 1180 that the day was a hectic one but that for the most part traffic flowed pretty good through the county transfer station on Stockade Road.
Public Works Director Lamar Canada said that the county made the decision to hold the Free Garbage Day on Friday and Saturday as a way to alleviate some of the congestion the county has seen in the past at the transfer station. Commissioner Winters said that having the event on two days did seem to help the volume. There was also a remote site set up in Lyerly which was a cooperative endeavor between the county and the Town of Lyerly.
