At one point in time the Monroe, Georgia based Angel Food Ministries had over 1500 distribution points in the United States with over 400 in Georgia. There were churches in Chattooga County that participated with the program that was designed to sell discounted groceries to people in need.
On Wednesday the organization announced that they would be going out of business, citing the hard financial times. In 2006 the ministry had reported $96 million in revenue with $17 million in expenses. The founders of the ministry were sued by some of the board members of the organization after tax returns stated that the founders, Joe and Linda Wingo and their children, had drawn a combined salary of over $2 million. An FBI investigation was launched into the finances of the ministry in 2009.
The organization told the Associated Press on Wednesday that they would "cease operations immediately."
