According to a report by the AJC, Georgia is on pace to produce one of its smallest peanut harvest in over two decades. The article contributes the decline to the drough, disease, and an economic shift to other crops.
The article says that that on a good year close to 1 million tons of peanuts, but this year the harvest is likely to be 650,000 to 700,000 tons.
The latest forecast from the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts nationwide production will be down roughly 17 percent this year, said Scott Sanford of the U.S. Farm Service Agency.
