Kenney Moore, director of the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, will split time between Atlanta and Cave Spring for the immediate future as he fills the role left by the firing of former Georgia School for the Deaf Director Lee Shiver.

Matt Cardoza, director of communications for the Georgia Department of Education, confirmed Thursday afternoon that Shiver had been fired but would not elaborate about the reason.

In a letter to parents, students and GSD staff members, Georgia Chief Academic Officer Mike Buck said Moore will serve as interim director of the state school until GaDOE officials make a decision about future leadership there.

“I want to assure everyone that this change in leadership does not signal a lack of GaDOE support for GSD,” wrote Buck. “Rather, it is an effort by GaDOE to provide first class services to all of our students and their families.”

The letter, sent out Wednesday, does not include a time line for hiring a permanent replacement.
