The Georgia State Patrol post in Rome released the accident report from a fatal crash on Highway 48 on August 31, 2011.  According to the report, Winston Douglas Trapp, age 66 of Leesburg, Alabama was traveling east on Georgia 48 when he ran off the south shoulder of the roadway running over loose gravel on the edge of the road. 

After leaving the roadway his 2000 model Honda motorcycle ran into loose gravel on the edge of the road and struck the guardrail.  The driver’s body came to rest laying face down.  The motorcylce continued to travel over 50 feet before coming to a final rest.  According to the report, the drivers helmet was found almost 45 feet away from the body. 

Witnesses said that Trapp wrestled with the steering of his motorcycle after coming into contact with the gravel but could not regain control of his vehicle.  Chattooga County Coronor Earle Rainwater was called to the scene where the driver was pronounced dead.
