Current and former employees of Hays State Prison have contacted AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio commenting on the state of security at the correctional facility in Pennville.

The majority of people that have contacted us say that state wide budget cuts are to blame for the lack of security at the prison.  One current correctional officer that wished to remain anonymous pointed out the fact that there was more staff at Hays Prison when it opened up then there is now, yet the population at Hays has steadily grown over the years.  Most of those who have talked with AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio have agreed that all the guard towers at the prison should be manned.

We have even heard from employees at Walker State Prison in Rock Spring, Georgia who say they have seen the affects of the budget cuts at the prison located in Walker County.

The Department of Corrections continues to state that budget cuts have not affected security at Hays Prison.
