Despite the fact that local media including AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio and The Summerville News have been reporting for sometime that the homestead tax exemption is gone for this year many people are surprised to see their tax bills.
Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters along with Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Kathy Brown and State Representative Barbara Massey Reece have all talked about the fact that the State of Georgia would not be allowing the home stead tax exemption this year, but some folks just haven’t got the word and were surprised as their tax bill began to arrive this week.
The average tax bill in Chattooga County is around $150 higher this year because the homestead tax exemption was taken away by the Georgia General Assembly. Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Kathy Brown wants people to know that the reason for the increase is their property tax bill is a decision from Atlanta not a local one.
