Emanuel Steffon Smith was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Friday after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Smith was accused of killing another inmate at the Floyd County Jail in 2008. He will also serve five years on probation following his release.

Reports said that a fight between Smith and inmate Larry Stokes, a Gordon County inmate, occured in cell block L on Feb 26, 2008.

Officers reported that Stokes was found face down on his bunk following the fight. The medical staff was called and CPR was administered before he was transported to Floyd Medical Center.

Stokes regained consciousness but later died at the hospital in March.

Smith was serving a five year sentence for burglary and possession of a tools for the commission of a felony and will get credit for his time served.
