Trouble struck Hays Prison Saturday afternoon as a small group of inmates created a riot inside the prison. The incident occurred around noon and involved 20 inmates in Block D-1, according to Joan Heath, public affairs director for the State Department of Corrections. No injuries were reported among inmates or corrections officials at the scene, Heath said. The prison did receive some damage, but Heath said she did not have specifics. Prison officials referred all calls to Heath, who said the DOC is investigating the incident. Heath said the situation was quickly brought under control. Chattooga County Sheriff John Everett commented that some inmates involved were transported to Riedsville and the worst of the rioters were transported Jackson’s HiMax Facility.
The Georgia Department of Corrections has not released an official statement at this time regarding the incident.
