As of Wednesday afternoon, the death was ruled as an accidental drowning, as the autopsy reports showed that there was no trauma to the body and Strefling’s lungs were filled with water.
LaFayette Public Safety director chief Tommy Freeman said Strefling, and another man went swimming in the lake off of the culvert area, which is behind the new LaFayette High School off McCarter Road.
Freeman said there was a woman with the two men, but she did not enter the water. As the two men jumped off of the culvert into the water, the other man came up, but Strefling did not, according to Freeman.
The woman and other man noticed Strefling did not come up almost immediately, Freeman said.
Freeman said the other swimmer and the woman contacted authorities. The call to authorities came in at 9:45 p.m. Rescuers from LaFayette Fire Department, Walker County Fire Department, and Walker EMS responded.
The body was taken to the crime lab in Atlanta for a full autopsy, where the death was ruled accidental as of Wednesday afternoon.
