A LaFayette neighborhood was evacuated for more than four hours Monday night after a man threatening suicide went into nearby woods and fired a gun.

Walker County sheriff Steve Wilson confirmed that the man is a former Sheriff’s Office employee.

According to Wilson:

Authorities were notified about 7:30 p.m. Monday that a man living on Flatstone Drive, off Bell Road, in LaFayette was threatening suicide. He went into woods behind his residence with a gun and fired a shot either into the air or into the ground.

Authorities talked to him for several hours before he came out of the woods. He was taken to Hutchison Medical Center for mental evaluation.

During the ordeal neighborhood residences were evacuated for safety.

No charges have been filed.

“Someone had an emotional episode,” Wilson said. “Our ultimate goal is to resolve it, without anyone being injured.”
