Today is the last day residents have to register in order to vote in the July 20 party primaries.

The Georgia secretary of state maintains a My Voter Page website at www.sos.georgia.gov that lets voters check their registration status, poll location and even a sample copy of their ballot.

Anyone who voted in the 2008 presidential election should still be listed as active, although those who have moved since then must either update their address or vote in their former precinct.

Applications are available at a number of government agency offices but Floyd County Elections Supervisor Evon Billups recommended registering at her office, 12 E. Fourth Ave., to ensure the 5 p.m. deadline is met.

To be eligible, a voter must be at least 18 years old by the day of the election, a citizen of the United States and a legal resident of Georgia and the county of registration.

Registrants must show one of six acceptable forms of photo identification:

  • Any valid photo ID issued by the state or federal government, including a free Voter ID card that can be issued at the elections office;
  • A Georgia drivers license, even if expired;
  • A valid employee photo ID issued by any department of a federal, state, county or city government;
  • A valid U.S. military ID;
  • A valid U.S. passport; or
  • A valid tribal ID.
