Chattooga County have less than a week left to burn outdoors. The Georgia EPD granted a request by Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters that has allowed residents trying to clean up after the April Tornado that struck the Northwestern corner of Chattooga County to burn vegitation.
The EPD rarely grants permission to burn past the "burn ban" which normally runs from May 1st to October 1st. Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters said that he made the request due to the fact that many of the areas hit by the tornado were 20 miles or more from the county’s chipping facility, making it harder for residents to bring in limbs and trees to be chipped by the county.
Residents have until Sunday, May 16th to burn outdoors. A permit can be obtained by calling the Georgia Forestry Commission in Summerville at 706-857-0800. You must call – the online permit system will not allow for the special burn permits.
