Roy Barnes was the favored front runner in the race for the Democratic nomination for Governor since he entered the race. The one-term former Governor of Georgia was defeated 8 years ago by Sonny Perdue and now is seeking his old job.
Local Democrats in Chattooga County were not surprised by Barnes victory in Tuesday’s Democratic Primary. Chattooga County Democratic Party Chairman Tim Shifflet said that name recognition and the fact that Barnes is a "known commodity" lead to the former governor’s victory in Chattooga County and across the state.
The Chattooga County Democratic Party chose Barnes as the speaker for the annual Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner held in Summerville earlier this year. Barnes was also being supported by two of Chattooga County’s most well-known Democrats, Gary McConnell and Bobby Lee Cook.
While it’s not clear who Barnes will face in the General Election, local Democrats think that the former governor will do well in Chattooga County come November.
