At last week’s Lyerly Town Council meeting, council members discussed the possibility of the Town of Lyerly allowing Liquor Sales inside the city limits.  Currently there are no liquor sales allowed in Chattooga County.  Municipalities such as Lyerly, Summerville or Trion could allow liquor sales, but there are no ordinances for liquor sales in the county at this time.

Lyerly Town Clerk Joy Hampton told AM 1180 on Monday that Lyerly has removed the Liquor idea from their agenda for the Town Council Meeting which is scheduled for this evening.  The council members discovered several legal issues involved with the liquor idea that forced the removal of the item from the agenda.  One problem is that a liquor referrendum would have to start with a citizen’s petition before it could be put on the ballot for voters to decide.

Town Council members had discussed the idea during the work session as a way to raise revenue for the town.  Currently people in Chattooga County who wish to purchase liquor must travell to Rome, Chattanooga or Fort Payne to make their purchase.
