The Chattooga County Commissioners office released a press statement on Friday saying that the Lyerly Dam Bridge over the Chattooga River was closed until further notice.  The Georgia State Department of Transportation has ruled the bridge unsafe for motor vehicle traffic.

The county department of public works closed the bridge Friday afternoon after receiving word from the DOT.  Chattooga Countians will remember a similar problem happened with the Berryton Bridge when the state DOT deemed it unsafe for traffic.  After nearly 9 months the Berryton Bridge was rebuilt.

There has been no further word from the commissioner’s office as to how long the Lyerly Dam Bridge will be closed.
