The Lyerly Town Council met this week in their regular monthly meeting and discussed the issue of smoking in the public park in Lyerly. At a previous work session the idea had been talked about with some in favor of a total ban on all tobacco products at the town’s public recreation area.
The idea to totally ban smoking at the park was scrapped by the council members at this week’s meeting. One of the biggest problems with Lyerly enacting a smoking ban at the park is the area of enforcement. Since Lyerly does not have a police department the area is patroled by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department – however deputies can only enforce county codes.
This week the Lyerly Town Council voted to set up "tobacco friendly" areas of the park to accomadate tobacco users.
