Lyerly School continues to make news not only around Chattooga County, but around the state of Georgia as well. Recently Lyerly School made the list published by the Georgia Public Policy Foundation for schools that have a high poverty rate, yet the students score high on tests. Most experts see a connection between the poverty rates and test scores. According to the statistics 66% of the children at Lyerly School are close to or below the poverty rate, however the students test scores continue to be higher than average. The 2008 Report Card for Parents numerically ranks 1,190 public elementary schools, 486 middle schools and 380 high schools in the state by an achievement score based on the percentage of students meeting and exceeding standards.
