An all-night search for a couple who were lost on Big Cedar Creek Monday night ended with the pair being found safely on Tuesday, officials said.

According to Tim Herrington, deputy director of the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency:

Karlee Hicks, 24, and Aaron Morris, 25, were separated from a group that was canoeing on the creek. After receiving a missing persons call around midnight, authorities began searching.

“Unfortunately the vegetation and undergrowth was just too thick,” Herrington said. “We waited until daybreak and put canoes in the creek off Lyons Bridge Road.”

Hicks and Morris were found on a creek bank around 10 a.m. Tuesday. They were transported by helicopter to Big Cedar RV Park. Neither suffered serious injuries.

“They said (the canoe) overturned and they lost their paddles and life jackets,” Herrington said.

The Floyd County Police Department, the Rome Police Department, the Department of Natural Resources and the Cave Spring Police and Fire Department assisted in the search. The Georgia State Patrol provided the helicopter.
