Late last week workers with a bridge inspection company were at the bridge that crosses the East Fork of Little River at Cloudland on Highway 48.  The bridge inspectors were doing work to determine bedrock depths at the site.

Chattooga County Public Works Director Lamar Canada said that the Highway 48 bridge over the East Fork of Little River at Cloudland is slated to be replaced sometime within the next two years.  The bridge is over 70 years old and was built by WPA crews during the Depression Era.

Last year work was completed about 3 miles up the road at Whatley’s Curve in Mentone on a new bridge at the middle fork of Little River.  A new bridge was built at the site before the old bridge was torn down so that there was a minimal affect on traffic coming over the mountain.

For now, the Georgia Department of Transportation has not set any dates for replacing the bridge at Cloudland.
