At the hearing for the county budget on Friday Chattooga County Commissioner Mike Dawson addressed questions regarding the dispute between the county and the county’s larges employer, Mt. Vernon Mills in Trion.
The controversy centers around Mt. Vernon’s dispute with county over the value of the company’s Trion property evaluation. At this time it appears that the issue is headed to court. In the meantime Mt. Vernon will have to pay 85% of the companies current assesed value. Tax Commissioner Kathy Brown stated that anyone who’s property taxes are being appealed must pay 85% of the current assesed value while the matter is being resolved.
