State Representative Barbara Massey Reece addressed a small gathering of Chattooga County Democrats on Saturday and spoke about the changes to the new Georgia House District – soon to be District 12.

The new house district is comprised of all of Chattooga County and a larger portion of rural Floyd County.  The new district now includes Cave Spring and Coosa along with more of the Armuchee area and extends all the way to the Bartow and Gordon County lines.

Some had expected the Republican drawn map to split Chattooga County into parts of two separate districts which did not happen.  However, for the first time the district will include more Floyd County voters than Chattooga County voters.

Representative Reece said that she expects Republican opposition in the upcoming election.  Two years ago she ran with no Republican opposition.  Floyd County Commission Chairman Eddie Lumsden has said that he might seek the Republican nomination for the new Georgia House District 12 seat.

The new maps for both the Georgia House and Senate Districts are still waiting approval by the U.S. Justice Department.  Something that is required by the 1964 Voting Rights Act.
