October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Georgia has seen an increase in the reporting of domestic violence over the past 14 years. The collection of family violence data began in the last half of 1995 when passage of legislation mandated reporting of such incidents to the Georgia Crime Information Center by local law enforcement agencies. Since that time, the number of reporting offenses has increased steadily. From the latest date in 2007, there were 61,469 reported incidents of family violence. Children were involved in almost 34 % (21,063) of the total incidents. In an additional 19 % (11,753) of the incidents, the act was committed in the presence of children.
