Dean Harmon, 49, of a Maple Road address, was pronounced dead Thursday morning at Floyd Medical Center at 6:49 a.m. as the result of his bicycle being struck by a tractor trailer.

The man died from severe head and chest trauma sustained after being hit by a tractor trailer on an early morning bicycle ride. According to the Floyd County Police Department the bicyclist was traveling north near Henderson & Sons Funeral Home around 6 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a 2005 Mack truck, also traveling northbound.

Maple Road was shut down in both directions from 6:15 to 7 a.m.

No charges had been filed against the driver of the truck, who was also from Rome, but the investigation continues.  Floyd County Police say the bike had no reflective devises.
